Music fans have long used urban clothing to express their tastes and tell the world what their favourite bands are. And as some groups have stood the test of time, some T-shirts have remained as popular now as they were two or three decades ago.
So, for fashion enthusiasts who are keen to stay in touch with style, what are the most loved band T-shirts of all time?
Guns N Roses – Appetite for Destruction
Whether or not you know all of GNR’s songs by heart, you’ll certainly recognise this T-shirt. The band’s 1987 album was so popular that its image on a black shirt has remained commonplace in wardrobes for both those who are hard rock fans and those who are not for nearly 20 years.
If you love the record’s biggest hits like Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City and Sweet Child O’ Mine, this T-shirt is a must.
Nirvana – Smiley
Nirvana was the 1990s biggest grunge band featuring the late Kurt Cobain and Foofighter frontman Dave Grohl. One of the group’s most iconic images is the smiley face, thought to have been drawn by Cobain himself, an as such the T-shirt with the picture on has become famous the world round.
Of course, most people who wear it now are probably too young to remember the band’s biggest songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, All Apologies and Lithium.
However, in the few years Nirvana was around before Cobain – who was married to Courtney Love – took his life, it became one of the biggest bands of the decade.
Rolling Stones – 40’s Lick
You might not remember (or have even been alive) when the Rolling Stones were big in the ‘70s, but the band’s albums as well as this iconic symbol are still recognisable.
The bright red lips and tongue were designed by John Pasche, and it is believed the picture was based on Mick Jagger’s own mouth.
Voted the greatest logo for a band ever, it is hardly surprising so many people still buy this rock T-shirt some 45 years later!
